The Apple Gatherers

Description

Karl Anderson disliked the industrialized cities of his day and opted to paint rural settings seemingly untouched by modern development. The leisurely activity of apple picking contrasts with demanding work in urban factories, and the young girl dressed in all white may represent idealized innocence. The artist stated that his paintings were meant to capture “the fragrance of the beauty of life.”

Background & Context

Background Story

Karl Anderson (1874-1956) was an American painter known for the luminous, precisely observed genre scenes and portraits that make him one of the most accomplished painters of the American Impressionist tradition. The Apple Gatherers from 1912 depicts apple gatherers in the luminous, precisely observed manner that distinguishes Anderson's best work from the more general painting of his contemporaries. Anderson was a member of the National Academy of Design and one of the most accomplished painters of the American Impressionist tradition, and the 1912 date places this in his most productive period, when he was producing the luminous, precisely observed genre scenes that are his most accomplished works.

Cultural Impact

The Apple Gatherers is important in the history of American painting because it demonstrates the luminous, precisely observed manner that Anderson brought to genre scenes as one of the most accomplished painters of the American Impressionist tradition. Anderson's luminous, precisely observed genre scenes—combining the luminous effect of American Impressionism with the precise observation that is his most distinctive contribution—represent one of the most accomplished traditions in American Impressionist painting, and the 1912 painting shows this tradition at its most luminous.

Why It Matters

The Apple Gatherers is Anderson's luminous American Impressionist genre scene: apple gatherers rendered in the precisely observed manner of one of the most accomplished painters of the American Impressionist tradition. The 1912 painting shows the combination of luminous effect with precise observation that makes Anderson one of the most accomplished American Impressionist painters.
