Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's "Peasants with a Farm-cart" (c. 1790) is a spirited genre drawing executed in pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash over black chalk. Domenico (1727–1804) was the son and chief assistant of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and he developed a distinctive artistic personality that balanced his father's grand decorative manner with a more naturalistic, observant approach to everyday life. After his father's death in 1770, Domenico increasingly turned to scenes of contemporary life, particularly peasant life in the Veneto region. This drawing shows a farm cart being loaded or unloaded, with figures engaged in the practical work of agriculture. Domenico's line is looser and more anecdotal than his father's—he captures the specific postures, the weight of bodies, the movement of animals with a draftsman's keen eye. The brown wash gives the scene warmth and atmosphere. This work belongs to Domenico's late period, when he was also producing his famous series of "pulcinella" drawings and increasingly focusing on the observation of ordinary life rather than mythological spectacle.

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's genre drawings provide one of the most vivid records of 18th-century Venetian peasant life, offering a counterpoint to the aristocratic grandeur of his father's decorative cycles.
