[1] Opened in 1920 by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, then a German citizen who returned to the city after World War I, the Galerie Simon was named after Kahnweiler's French business partner André Simon. Kahnweiler had been Leger's exclusive dealer before WWI and worked closely with Flechtheim throughout the 1920s. Flechtheim exhibited the painting in 1928 in Berlin and in the catalogue thanked the artist, the Galerie Simon, Paris, and private collectors who sent loans to make the exhibition possible. In the catalogue, the painting (no. 16) was marked with an asterisk meaning it was for sale, but it is not clear if the painting had come from the artist or the Galerie Simon or whether it was sold. Since it later was in a Parisian collection, it is possible it was returned to the Galerie Smon. Louise Leiris was Kahnweiler's stepdaughter who in1940 took over his Galerie Simon, renaming it, to prevent its closure since both Kahnweiler and Simon were Jewish.
