Audette, Anna Held

Anna Held Audette (1938–2013) was an American painter, printmaker, and educator. Audette née Held was born New York City in 1938. She was the daughter of art historian Julius S. Held. She attended Smith College and the Yale School of Art. Audette taught art at the Southern Connecticut State University. She was the author of several books, including The Blank Canvas: Inviting the Muse (1993) and 100 Creative Drawing Ideas (2004). Audette died on June 9, 2013. Her work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. Posthumous exhibitions include Anna Held Audette: Requiem for the Industrial Age in 2014 at the Housatonic Museum of Art, The Art of Anna Held Audette in 2023 at the American Precision Museum, and Abandon in Place: The Worlds of Anna Audette in 2023 at the Florence Griswold Museum.

Audran I, Benoît

Benoît Audran the Elder (23 November 1661 – 3 September 1721) was a French engraver. The second son of Germain Audran, he was born at Lyons. He received his first instruction in the art of engraving from his father; but had afterwards the advantage of studying under his uncle, the celebrated Gérard Audran. Although he never equalled the admirable style of his uncle, he engraved many plates of historical subjects and portraits, which have justly established his reputation. His style, like that of Gérard, is bold and clear; his drawing of the figure is very correct; and there is a fine expression of character in his heads. He was received into the Academy in 1709, and was appointed engraver to the king, with a pension. He died in 1721, in the village of Ouzouer, near Sens. His portrait, after J. Vivien, has been engraved by his nephew Benoit, the younger. The following are his principal plates:

Audran, Jean

Jean Audran (1667–1756) was a French engraver and printmaker. The brother of Benoit, and the third son of Germain Audran, he was born at Lyons, Lyonnais, in 1667. After learning the rudiments of the art under his father, he was placed under the care of his uncle, the famous Gérard Audran, in Paris. Before he was twenty years of age he displayed uncommon ability, and became a very celebrated engraver. In 1706 he was made engraver to the king, with a pension and apartments at the Gobelins. The hand of a great master is discernible in all his plates; and without having attained the extraordinary perfection of Gérard Audran, his claim to excellence is very considerable. He died in 1756. Audubon, John James

John James Audubon (born Jean-Jacques Rabin, April 26, 1785 – January 27, 1851) was a French-American artist, entrepreneur, naturalist, explorer, and ornithologist. His combined interests in painting and ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. He was notable for his extensive studies of American birds and for his detailed (yet romantic) illustrations, which were engraved in Scotland and England for a large-format (double-elephant folio) color-plate (intaglio) book titled The Birds of America (1827–1838), and five volumes of accompanying text entitled Ornithological Biography (1831–1839). Audubon's scientific contributions were considerable but controversial. He was accused of fraud, plagiarism, and scientific misconduct during his life as well as posthumously. As of 2025, the IOC World Bird List (v.15.1) attributes him as the primary author of 23 bird species (14 of which were based on specimens he purchased or received from colleagues) and 13 subspecies. John Woodhouse Audubon (November 30, 1812 – February 21, 1862) was an American painter who was the second son of the ornithologist and painter John James Audubon. Like his father, he was primarily a painter of wildlife, but he also did some portraits and genre scenes of the westward migration.

Auerbach, Frank

Frank Helmut Auerbach (29 April 1931 – 11 November 2024) was a German-born British painter. Born in Germany to Jewish parents, he became a naturalised British subject in 1947. He is considered one of the leading names in the School of London, with fellow artists Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, both of whom were early supporters of his work.
