Catlett, Elizabeth
American
American and Mexican, 1915 - 2012
Elizabeth Catlett, born as Alice Elizabeth Catlett, also known as Elizabeth Catlett Mora (April 15, 1915 – April 2, 2012) was an American and Mexican sculptor and graphic artist best known for her depictions of the Black-American experience in the 20th century, which often focused on the female experience. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C., to parents working in education, and was the grandchild of formerly enslaved people. It was difficult for a black woman then to pursue a career as a working artist. Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching. However, a fellowship awarded to her in 1946 allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she settled and worked with the Taller de Gráfica Popular for twenty years and became head of the sculpture department for the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. In the 1950s, her main means of artistic expression shifted from print to sculpture, though she never gave up the former. Her work is a mixture of abstract and figurative in the Modernist tradition, with influence from African and Mexican art traditions. Catlett's work can be described as social realism because of her dedication to the issues and experiences of African Americans...
Catlin, George
American
American, 1796 - 1872
George Catlin ( KAT-lin; July 26, 1796 – December 23, 1872) was an American lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. His early work included engravings, drawn from nature, of sites along the route of the Erie Canal in New York State. Several of his renderings were published in one of the first printed books to use lithography, Cadwallader D. Colden's Memoir, Prepared at the Request of a Committee of the Common Council of the City of New York, and Presented to the Mayor of the City, at the Celebration of the Completion of the New York Canals, published in 1825, with early images of the City of Buffalo.

Dutch
Dutch, 1741 - 1799
Jacob Cats (1741–1799) was a Dutch draughtsman who also etched and painted. He was born at Altona in 1741 as the son of a Mennonite bookseller who had to flee Amsterdam because of a controversial publication. The family returned to Amsterdam after a few years. He studied under Abraham Starre and Pieter Louw. Initially he worked for the wallpaintings firm of Troost van Groenendoelen. Later he established his own firm where he collaborated with i.a. Egbert van Drielst. As the market for wallpapers diminished, and his fame as a draughtsman rose, he started to focus uniquely on the latter. He was celebrated for drawing townscapes and landscapes with realistically rendered persons and animals, his works having a distinct originality and being marked by a poetical rendering of the features of nature, as well as by careful manipulation. He also created a good feeling of depth in his work. They are often suggestive of seventeenth-century artists such as Adriaan van de Velde and Berchem, and are highly valued. He also copied some paintings on a smaller scale, and has left some etchings. He died at Amsterdam in 1799. His work is represented in nearly all major public collections in the Netherlands...
